Role-Specific Tactics
Tank:
Burn your cooldowns with care. Once you’ve been eaten by the boss, you’re helpless and can’t do anything until he spits you out. You wont be tanking for a while afterwards with the debuff you’ll get getting, anyway, so prepare yourself beforehand.
DPS:
Save your cooldowns for the second phase. There’ll be too much to think of during phase 1, and you’re better off working on keeping yourself alive than maximizing your output. Keep yourself in melee range at all times except when Magmaw is on the ground and just before the tank has taunted him back after a mangle.
Healer:
More or less everyone will be randomly hit by fire spit from the boss, regardless of where they are. Don’t rush back into melee range right away after phase 2. Give the tank a couple of seconds to taunt him first.
Special Case – Ranged Tank:
Maintain approx 30 yard distance to the raid so that they can reach your position with their AoE attacks. Unless you’re actively tanking the adds, stay away from them as they spawn.. they wont start moving until the fire has stopped flowing.
Strategy
So, Magmaw..
This entry-level boss for BRD has two phases: one where he’s upright and hurting the raid, and the other where we hurt him.
Description:
Phase One:
Magmaw periodically casts Magma Spew and other crap at the raid, while summoning Flame Pillars (Bad Shit) on a random person that is not in melee range. If there are no viable targets for this, he’ll cast it on anyone at random.
The Flame Pillar summons several small larval adds, each with 116k HP. These can burrow inside a player in melee combat to heal themselves back to full health.
Also, he will eventually cast Mangle on the tank. While munching him, he’ll him slam the floor with his body. This also enables three people to jump up on him and use the two chains dangling from his neck.
Phase Two:
Magmaw pinned to the ground, impaled on a giant spike on the floor. He cannot hurt anyone in this state, and will take double damage from all attacks against him.
Tactic:
The gist of this boss is to concentrate on surviving during phase one and go all out with DPS once he’s impaled on the ground.
The tanks should tank the boss from the left side, while the DPS and healers spread out along the edge but still remaining in his melee range. All are to do this apart from one person, who’s job it is to “eat” the pillars. A Demonology warlock is ideal for this, but a hunter will most likely work as well.
Engage the boss like normal and when the Flame Pillar strikes the ranged player moves out of the way. Help slowing the spawned adds and join the rest of the ranged dps to AoE them down.
The method for this will probably differ a bit depending on your group setup, but a demo warlock has the added ability to “tank” the adds while simultanously doing damage with Hellfire. This gives a bit more control than just a squall of AoE from afar.
There is no limit to how many adds there can be up at once so they will need to be killed off, the sooner the better.
Once Magmaw’s Mangle cooldown is up, he’ll pick up the tank and munch him following preparation to slam down on either half of the room. The effect will be clearly marked on the floor with a visual effect, so if you see it under your feet: RUN!
The current tank will get eaten! (omg!) and chewed on now. Prepare before this happens and pop a cooldown beforehand to reduce the incoming damage. Timing is everything.
Once the tank is spat out he’ll have a debuff that heavily reduces his armor for a while. Now is the time for a tankswitch: the second tank takes over, and when he’s eaten then first tank takes over again and so on and so forth.
Three people, decided before you engage the boss, will now attempt to mount up on the boss. Only two are needed, but some redundancy here is very useful. Once up there, you will enter a vehicle interface with one single ability, the chain toss. You must manually aim the chain on the big spike in front of him and both players must throw their chains at the SAME TIME. When successful, the boss will get impaled. If you time it wrong, he’ll tear himself free. There is only a very limited time to get this right, so keep at it.
Once on the ground, everyone are free to put the hurt on him…
Until he breaks loose again, and the whole process repeats.
A final note: Magmaw REMOVES the threat level from the tank he picks up to eat, so until the other tank has taunted the boss back, nobody stand in melee range or else you’ll just die.
